Chapter Nine

Brant was over at Chris’s when Nuala got back from Sydney at two o’clock on Wednesday afternoon.

He’d had someone out here inspecting some aspect of the property this morning, but he hadn’t told Misha why. He’d been pretty vague about it. Farm admin. Routine. She hadn’t questioned him more closely on the subject because, basically, they weren’t really speaking to each other.

This was less awkward than it sounded. You really didn’t need to speak to someone that much when you managed to avoid being in the same room with them whenever possible. Brant showered, Misha made coffee. Misha read by the fire, Brant stared at the computer in the farm office.

Easy.

She was dying to see Nuala—someone to vent to. When she saw the familiar car coming down the track, her heart went fluttery and light, but a part of this was awkwardness, she knew, rather than anticipation. What on earth was she going to tell Nu? The strange atmosphere between herself and Brant stuck out like a sore thumb and surely her friend would ask.

What’s up with you two, anyhow?

Um, I sort of tried to seduce your brother. But it didn’t work. He’s angry with me—he has to be—and I’m angry with myself. What was I trying to prove? Why did I risk my friendship with you in such a stupid way, Nu? And my friendship with him. This hurt and confusion about Gian-Marco and the engagement is no excuse.

Nuala arrived like a whirlwind. She hugged Misha and started talking about the wedding before she’d even shut the car door.

“We’ve booked the venue—Randwick—lucky to get the date, apparently. It’s gorgeous. I can show you on the Internet. Chris is going to be speechless. And I have the dress. Which of course he is not going to see until the day. Mum and I are looking at the different menus. They have such an incredible choice, I get hungry just reading the descriptions and it’s so hard to decide.”

“Will people really mind what they eat, though?” Misha asked gently. “I won’t. We’re all going to be there for you and Chris, not for the free food.”

Nuala looked a little shocked. “I want to create memories people will treasure. Your jaded palate is in a different league from most people’s, Mish, don’t forget.”

“Too true! Hey, though, you look gorgeous! The hair, the eyebrows. Did you have a facial?”

“All of that. Manicure. Clothes.” She posed and beamed. “But meanwhile I’ve still only narrowed the choice of florist down to three. One of them does all this really sleek Japanese-style design but I’m not sure if that fits the rest of the mood. And invitations are still up in the air. Which is not so good because we’re running out of time. The plain silver on white looks really good, but I don’t think it goes with the cream and sage, but when I looked at sage for the invitations it looked hard to read and just not the right shade.”

“Nu, you’re forgetting to breathe,” Misha said.
